Scottish Disability Equality Forum (SDEF)

SDEF is an organisation that is a registered charity limited by guarantee. It is governed by a Board of Directors which is responsible for the strategic business and staffing the organisation. The Board of Directors meet approximately 8 times throughout the year.

SDEF has two main areas of work: The first being policy, information, communication, and development. The second is the Access Project, where SDEF is the umbrella organisation for all the Disability Access Panels in Scotland.

SDEF has six members of staff at the time of writing this guide:

  • Chief Executive Officer (CEO);
  • Disability Access Officer (DAO);
  • Information and Communications Officer (ICO);
  • Access Worker; and
  • two part-time administration staff.

The CEO is responsible for the day-to-day running of the organisation and is also responsible for the general work and welfare of the staff. The CEO reports directly to the Convener. The Disability Access Officer reports directly to the Treasurer but is also responsible to the CEO for the day-to-day running of the Access Project. SDEF Offices are in Cooperage Way in Alloa, Clackmannanshire although staff work throughout mainland Scotland and the islands. 

SDEF have four different types of membership: Disability Access Panels, other Disability led Organisations, Organisations that are not principally disability led and Individual membership.
