Caithness Disabled Access Panel meet on the last Wednesday of the month in Pulteney Centre in Wick from 12 till 2 this is suitable for disabled people and also the council employees who come during lunch hour, lunch is provided by the chairperson and eaten during the meeting, there is also a video screen provided for members who prefer staying at home.
There is usually a speaker who provides services for disabled people like ourselves, our group includes Disabled/Carers/MS/Deaf and Sight group/Enable/Endometriosis / 2 local Councillors and CVG who support the group with secretarial work etc.
We were asked this month to visit a bird Hide which has been specially made for disabled people and gives a clear view of all the birds beside you with special low windows for wheelchair users, Kevin a member of our group in a wheelchair performed cutting the ribbon and cake provided by the group from St Johns pool Dunnet, Caithness which will now be featured on our website.
We have also run an award scheme for disabled toilets in Caithness a Gold award being awarded to the Dounreay Archive building in Caithness we had the groups who were included to come to this building to get presented with their awards by Helen Budge Chairperson and Louise Smith who obtained grants from the windfarms to provide the money for the scheme and went around the toilets and worked out the awards. Caithness has been a very busy Panel over the years even during lockdown we still had our meetings organised by CVG . I am proud of our panel and all the work we have done over the years and thank everyone who has worked hard to get Access for all in Caithness.
